• A day trip from Addis Ababa to Bishoftu (Debre Zeit) in the Oromia Region offers a scenic escape just 45 km away, roughly an hour’s drive.
  Departing from your hotel or residence around 7:30 AM, you’ll travel by private car or van along a well-paved road. It’s best to bring a swimsuit if you plan to use resort pools, along with a hat, sunscreen, a camera, comfortable walking shoes, and optional snacks or water. Upon arriving in Bishoftu around 8:30 AM, you may start with a traditional Ethiopian coffee at a local café before heading to Lake Bishoftu (Lake Hora) at about 9:00 AM for a peaceful lakeside walk, birdwatching, photography, and learning about the area’s crater-lake geology.
  By 10:00 AM, a short drive takes you to Lake Bishoftu Guda, a quieter spot ideal for reflection, sketching, or enjoying panoramic views, with an optional boat ride available. At 11:00 AM, you can continue to Kuriftu Resort and Spa or another lakeside retreat for a relaxing break, where you may enjoy pool access, book spa or massage services, stroll the grounds, or browse local art boutiques. Lunch at 12:30 PM can be enjoyed at a lakeside restaurant such as Kuriftu, Asham Africa, or Babogaya Lake Viewpoint Lodge, offering fresh fish, tibs, and Western-style dishes with beautiful views.
  After lunch, around 1:30 PM, a visit to Lake Babogaya provides one of the most picturesque settings in Bishoftu, where you can kayak, canoe, relax by the water, or meet local artists and lodge owners. By 3:00 PM, you may choose a cultural or historical stop, such as the Green Crater Lake (Lake Chelekleka) for birdwatching—especially rewarding during the dry season—or a small art gallery or cultural center. At 4:00 PM, enjoy a final coffee or juice break at a local café like Kategna Bishoftu or Bon Café before beginning your return journey at 5:00 PM. You’ll arrive back in Addis Ababa around 6:00 PM for drop-off at your hotel or a restaurant of your choice.
  If booked as a guided tour, the package typically includes round-trip transportation, entrance fees to lakes or resorts, and optional additions such as lunch, spa access, boat rentals, and a local guide. The trip is enjoyable year-round, with mornings offering the clearest views. Birdwatchers may want to bring binoculars to spot pelicans, herons, and ibises.
